Multibagger

A stock that returns several times the invested capital (a '10-bagger' is 10×). Tail outcomes are rare and hard to screen for in advance; chasing them is a concentrated, high-variance bet, not an edge.

Market returns are radically skewed: a small fraction of stocks generate most of the index's long-run gain, while the median stock underperforms cash over its life. The index wins partly because it is guaranteed to hold whichever stocks turn out to be the tail.

Screens can shift the odds at the margin — in our survivorship-free Japanese panel, certain breakout profiles raised the historical multibagger hit rate — but the base rate stays low and the misses are many. Raising a rare probability is not the same as a dependable strategy, which is why this stayed a research note rather than a recommendation.
